Biography
Francesca D'Acunzo was born in Rome, April 19, 1969. She graduated in Chemistry in May 1994 at "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Chemistry Department in Prof. Carlo Galli's lab. After a brief working experience in private firms, in January 1996 she enrolled in the Graduate Program in Chemistry at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA. She earned her PhD degree in Chemistry in August 2000 after conducting her research in Prof. Joachim Kohn's lab at New Jersey Center for Biomaterials. She held a post-doc position in Prof. Galli's Lab in Rome in the years 2000 - 2004 to conduct research on laccase-mediator systems. From 2004 to 2008 she was appointed QC manager and Qualified Person at a pharmaceutical production plant in Rome (ICI Rende). From 2008 to 2011 she worked as a post-doc under the direction of Prof. Antonio Boccia at the Department of Public Health and Infectious Diseases at "La Sapienza" to conduct research on air and water quality in waste processing plants and in the food processing industry. In November 2011 she was hired as a Researcher at the Italian National Research Council (CNR), Institute for Biological Systems (ISB, former Institute of Chemical Methodologies) in Rome. Since 2017 she has been working at the Rome section of ISB at the Department of Chemistry of "La Sapienza" University
Research activity
Scientific area:
Organic chemistry
Research activity:
Research activity is focused on a specific functional group, named 2-(hydroxyimino)aldehyde, endowed with interesting photochemical, acid-base and chelating properties. This functional group is highly versatile and can be used in different areas of research: - Synthesis of multi stimuli-responsive polymers via RAFT radical polymerization. Investigation on their aggregation properties, also in response to external stimuli, such as temperature and exposure to light. - Study of photoisomerization reactions through photo-NMR techniques - Synthesis of photoreactive amphiphilic molecules and of their photoisomerization reactions - Complexation of metals - Interaction with biological systems: fungi, bacteria Both Undergraduate and Graduate Students are involved in these research activities in partial fulfillment of their requirements toward earning their Chemistry Degrees. Numerous collabrations are in place with other Researchers in the Chemistry Department and at CNR, particularly at the Institute for Biological Systems in Rome and Montelibretti.
