New generation composite Electrolytes for lithium batteries with enhanced safety properties Line of research A valid approach, to address flammability in lithium batteries, is the replacement or hybridization of volatile molecular solvents, used in common electrolytes, with Ionic Liquids (ILs). Moreover, using IL-Li salt solutions or their mixture with molecular solvents to form gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) is successful to improve safety and stability. In our laboratory functionalized ILs and composite GPEs are synthesized and characterized, to be combined with electrodes and tested in lithium batteries. The challenging route to novel solid-state ceramic or glassy electrolytes is also attempted.
